Fernwood Cellars Syrah

Granted this is not an Amador or El Dorado County wine.  That said, however, this wine was so remarkable that it couldn’t go uncommented upon.

This 2008 Syrah, from Fernwood Cellars is quite good.  We were at a restaurant and ordered it off their menu because it was reasonably local, not Napa, and priced right.  Yes, we are that way.

Frankly, we weren’t expecting something this good.  It has a nice, floral nose.  It is a very nice Syrah, nicely balanced fruit and smooth tannins with a remarkable eucalyptus finish.  At first I thought it had a medicinal finish, but as soon as I placed the flavor as eucalyptus, it took on a whole new, breezy aspect that I found quite compelling.  This is good with food, but goes well with itself.
